Golf is a sport on the rise in the younger generations and it’s becoming more popular through schools in the Roanoke Valley the only way to play is to make JV in 8th grade or to play for a club team. So they should allow 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle schoolers to play.
Their home course would be HVCC, and tournaments would be held for all the schools. Their season would start at the beginning of the school year and end at the end of September.
I think this sport is important to have for students because a lot of students may be interested in golf and won’t have chances to learn about it or try to learn the sport until high school, and knowing it at a younger age, kids can take a lot from the sport of golf. I also think this is a good idea because some of the kids don’t want to play the big three sports, basketball, football, and soccer, so golf is a good expansion to the sports we have at Andrew Lewis Middle School and other schools in Roanoke. Our Salem high school golf team has won 2 state championships and has produced some d1 golfers also and Team USA athletes, the older golfers at the high school could coach and help out and teach some of the kids about the game of golf.
The pros and cons of having a school golf team, the price of traveling, and clubs and course fees will be a con, but a pro to it is we can raise money through tournaments and sell ads for people. This circles back to my point: if a kid is not interested in one of the big three sports they can try golf and learn it, and this is why I think we should have middle school golf.
