Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that is dedicated to creating computers and programs that can replicate human thinking. Some AI programs can correct their mistakes by analyzing complex sets of data and improving their performance without the help of humans to refine their programming. Companies use AI to streamline their production processes, project gains and losses, and predict when maintenance will have to occur.
AI also has 24/7 availability. Humans only work for a couple hours a day. Whereas machines work all the time. This can help businesses produce more of their product and provide a better customer experience than what humans could do.
Another reason AI is better for businesses is because AI works all the time, but doesn’t get paid. So ultimately the businesses save more money to focus on their product. Also, AI is unbiased, humans tend to fill their work with biased feelings and thoughts. AI is an algorithm and has been only programmed to do work, and certain algorithms are made to be unbiased.
In addition, AI also decreases human error. Mistakes happen all the time, but AI would eliminate mistakes all together in the workplace. Also, in places where conditions are hard for humans, like space or underwater, robots will take the place of humans by using AI.
Finally, using AI programs can save humans from the boredom of repetitive tasks, and save their energy for more creative thinking. Jobs such as analyzing data, generating reports, and verifying information. All these jobs for humans can be replaced by AI.
Now I would like to focus on why AI could be controversial for human society. For some people, the reasons listed above would make people want to use AI right now. But there are some reasons AI could be catastrophic. One of the worst feared problems is people’s consumer data privacy. Consumer data privacy is how companies use, collect, manage, and protect various data from transactions.
A couple more disadvantages of AI is reduced jobs for humans and cost increase for developing companies. Since AI can complete more difficult tasks, their value will be appreciated more. Like said above AI would be cheaper for companies, but would be more costly for the companies that are developing AI programs.
After time, machines degrade after use. For example, if AI is installed into a machine used to package food products, over time the machine parts would be damaged. In addition to that statement above, if AI doesn’t have self repairing devices then the machines will break. Over time AI will degrade. Next, humans naturally learn from their mistakes, but AI has to learn on its own. With AI making its own decisions, anything could happen.
Finally, the last disadvantage is AI lacks emotion and creativity. AI can’t create new solutions to problems that involve creative thinking. AI generates specific grammatical answers, while humans answer creatively and artistically. If a company is looking for a solution that humans can make the more creative decision when AI can make the more informed decision. To conclude, AI has advantages and disadvantages that we know about or don’t. Whether it is money saving or emotion lacking AI could be the future of our generation.
